Located in Nalanda district, Harnaut carries unusual political weight as it includes Kalyan Bigha, the ancestral village of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
The constituency, which is part of the Nalanda Lok Sabha seat, has long been associated with Kumar’s first political outing – he contested Harnaut four times and emerged victorious in 1985 (Janata Party) and 1995 (Samata Party).

Past performance and election trends
In the 2020 Assembly elections, Hari Narayan Singh retained Harnaut with 65,404 votes (41.24%) and defeated LJP’s Mamta Devi, who got 38,163 votes (24.06%). Congress candidate Kundan Gupta stood third with 21,144 votes (13.33%).
In 2015, Singh won with 71,933 votes (45.91%), defeating LJP’s Arun Kumar (by 14,295 votes), who got 57,638 votes (36.78%).
According to Election Commission data, there were 3,08,138 registered voters in Harnaut in 2020, including 1,62,536 men, 1,45,594 women and 8 third gender voters.
