Macron Denounces Trump’s Tariff Threats over Greenland
PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday condemned US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on European countries that oppose Denmark’s efforts to seize Greenland territory.
“Tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context,” Macron said in French and English on X.
“If approved, Europeans will respond in a united and coordinated manner,” he added. “We will ensure that Europe’s sovereignty is supported.
“It is in this spirit that I will engage with our European partners,” Macron said.
Trump said many European countries will be subject to 10 percent tariffs starting in February, and that figure will rise to 25 percent on June 1 until he completes his purchase of Greenland.
