Dan Bongino returns to private life after FBI deputy director role

Dan Bongino returned to private life on Sunday after serving less than a year as deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Bongino said at X that Saturday was his last day on the job before returning to “civilian life.”

“It’s been an incredible year, thanks to President Trump’s leadership and determination. It has been the honor of a lifetime to work with Director Patel and serve you, the American people. See you on the other side,” he wrote.

The former FBI deputy director announced in mid-December that he would leave his post at the bureau at the beginning of the new year.

President Donald Trump had previously praised Bongino, who took office in March, for his work at the FBI.

“Dan did a great job. I think he wants to get back on his show,” Trump told reporters.

Bongino spoke publicly about the personal toll of the job during an appearance on “Fox & Friends” in May, saying she sacrificed a lot to take on the role.

Stating that both he and FBI Director Kash Patel worked long hours, he said, “I gave up everything for this.”

“I’m in DC, staring at these four walls all day long, alone, divorced from my partner — not divorced, but I mean separated — and it’s hard. I mean, we love each other, and it’s hard to be apart,” she added.

Bongino’s departure leaves Andrew Bailey, who was appointed associate deputy director in September 2025, as the office’s other deputy director.
