Women’s hockey gold medals return to the United States.

The Americans came back from a late deficit to win a 2-1 thriller in overtime against their arch-foes in Canada.

The Americans started the second period with a power play from a penalty at the end of the first period, but it was Canada who briefly scored the first goal of the game. It was the first goal the Americans allowed in the knockout phase, ending three hours, 52 minutes and seven seconds of hockey.

The Canadians continued their power play late in the third quarter, still holding the Americans scoreless, but the USA managed to end the game with just over four minutes left. With the puck in Canadian territory and about 2:30 left in the game, the Americans pulled their goalie and the risk proved worth it when captain Hilary Knight deflected a wrister from the top of the zone to tie the game and eventually force overtime. After regulation, the shots were 29-28 in favor of Canada.

Four minutes and seven seconds into the overtime period, Megan Keller made a nifty move and slotted the puck past the Canadian goalie to preserve the gold. This is the Americans’ first gold medal since 2018.

Team Canada lost two games throughout the Olympics, both against the undefeated USA.

Canada and the United States have met in the gold medal match in 23 of 24 IIHF Women’s World Championships and 21 of 23 4 Nations Cups since international competition began in 1987. Barring the pandemic, the last time the two countries did not face each other in a gold medal match at any international tournament was 2019, and before that, 1993.

At the 2019 World Championship, Canada won the bronze medal, while the USA defeated Finland. This remains the only year in which Canada failed to finish with gold or silver, while the United States’ streak of playing for gold remains intact.
