‘Utterly overwhelmed’: British writer-director’s short film earns Oscar nod | Oscars

A writer-director from Stanmore, Middlesex, whose short film was nominated for an Oscar, said he felt “completely overwhelmed” by the praise.

Lee Knight’s movie a friend of DorothyThe film, starring Miriam Margolyes and Stephen Fry, is competing in the best live action short film category.

Knight, 42, told the Guardian: “This is a tough job where rejection is constant and survival can be difficult. But as storytellers we must never give up.” “We have a duty to get our stories out into the world for all to see. I hope this is a message to artists who feel unworthy of their own voice.”

The 22-minute film tells a heartfelt intergenerational story of loneliness and unlikely friendships. Margolyes plays Dorothy, an elderly widow whose lonely life changes after a teenager accidentally kicks a football into her yard.

They form an unlikely friendship through their shared love of plays and reading. Alistair Nwachukwu plays young neighbor JJ, and Oscar Lloyd plays Dorothy’s grandson.

The film is inspired by Knight’s friendship with lonely widow Shirley Woodham, who lived with her and her husband in a former council house until her death in 2022, aged 89.

Knight said that its title was taken from the code used by gay people in times of persecution, and that it conveyed his first feelings of being “alien” as a gay man.

He said: “I wanted the film to be an ode to a sacred place for someone in the closet. ‘Dorothy’s Friends’ was a coded way of describing gay men because their friends, like Dorothy and the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, were a little different. They were all misunderstood.”

“For me, being a gay man, being bullied as a teenager and finding refuge with older women, I always felt safe around women. This story is an ode to the Dorothys in our lives and our safe spaces to ‘be ourselves.’ I always found that in Shirley.”

“His wife had passed away, his son and daughter were living abroad and he was very lonely. He had supported theaters as a ‘friend’ throughout his life. Thus, we had a very good friendship. We took him to the theater. We took care of him, too. We became very close. I wrote this film inspired by that relationship.”

Knight spoke of “the power of human connection, regardless of the differences we may perceive between each other.”

Stephen Daldry, who was previously nominated for the best director Oscar for his films Billy Elliot, The Hours and The Reader, is the executive producer of the film. He said: “Lee is an old friend. This was a huge career-defining moment for him; his first short film was nominated for an Academy Award. [is]”I think it’s surprising.”

He said he found the film “incredibly moving” in a world where there is such a divide between generations. He called Margolyes’ performance “wonderful” and predicted that Nwachukwu would become “one of the most important players of his generation.”

Daldry said: “I saw it [Nwachukwu] many times both on stage and screen. “I think he is extraordinary and a true talent.”

Knight appeared in Ian McKellen’s Hamlet and as Rosencrantz in one of the Harry Potter films. However, when he wrote the script, Potter did not know Margolyes, another member of the cast. He said he was very surprised when he agreed to do it.

When asked how he reacted when his neighbor told Woodham he had inspired a movie script, he said: “He thought it was hilarious. He just laughed. I gave him the script. I don’t know if he ever read it.”

After his death, his son found the script among his belongings and encouraged Knight to make the film.

The production is supported by the charity Age UK, whose chief executive Paul Farmer said: “Although Dorothy is a fictional character in this example, there are many real older people out there for whom this extremely lonely existence is the stark reality, and not many will be lucky enough to meet a friend like JJ.”

The filmmakers plan to expand the film’s reach to schools and nursing homes across the country.
