Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation launches pilot project for decentralized wet waste processing with Aerobin composters

As a prelude towards implementation of Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026, Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) has undertaken a pilot project on decentralized wet waste processing using five Aerobin composters at Peerzadiguda.

The pilot project was implemented in partnership with two NGOs and Malkajgiri Municipal Commissioner T. Vinay Krishna Reddy will officially inaugurate the project on July 10 at Parvathapur Integrated Solid Waste Management Park in Peerzadiguda. According to a statement from MMC, the program aims to create awareness among Resident Welfare Association (RWA) representatives and promote management of wet waste at the neighborhood level.

Aerobin composters convert wet waste into organic fertilizer through a natural aerobic process without requiring electricity. Designed for urban environments, the units operate without unpleasant odors or fly nuisances and produce compost faster than traditional methods. Their compact design makes them suitable for gated communities, apartment complexes and bulk waste generators, the statement said.

Following the success of the pilot project, the company decided to expand the initiative to all of its circles. At least one recognized gated community or RWA in each circle will be selected for implementation.

One of the NGOs, Modern Architects for Rural India, with financial support from Swarna Lata Motherson Trust, will set up 80 Aerobin units at 15 strategically identified locations from August 1, 2026. The selected sites include 13 residential societies and an educational institution, while the existing Peerzadiguda facility will be developed as a model learning and demonstration centre.

MARI will assign dedicated project staff to oversee daily operations and provide technical support. The initiative also includes door-to-door awareness campaigns on waste segregation and training for sanitation workers and cleaning staff, the statement said.
