Various parts of T.N. to get light to heavy rain from January 7

Scattered rains are expected to occur in Tamil Nadu from January 7 and the Northeast monsoon is expected to extend. Some districts in the south may experience heavy rainfall for two days.

The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) predicts rain in coastal areas starting from Wednesday and spreading to other areas on Thursday. While the rainfall is expected to continue in light and moderate intensity in a few places until January 11, the southern and delta regions are expected to receive heavy rainfall on January 9 and 10.

Six districts, including Ramanathapuram and Mayiladuthurai, may experience heavy rainfall on Friday and areas such as Cuddalore, Thanjavur and Villupuram may record heavy rainfall on Saturday.

Monsoon rains have spread to January this year, as in previous years. RMC Chairman (Additional Officer) B. Amudha said that under the influence of upper air cyclonic circulation, a low pressure area formed over southeastern Bay of Bengal and adjoining eastern Equatorial Indian Ocean on Monday evening. The weather system is expected to become more prominent on Tuesday evening and will affect rainfall activities in the state, especially in the coastal and southern regions.

“We will monitor rainfall activity in the region before deciding on withdrawal of monsoon. Dry weather conditions persisting for several consecutive days are among the key criteria for declaring withdrawal,” he said.

According to RMC data, monsoon rains lasted till January 27 last year and during this period, Tirunelveli’s Oothu and Nalumukku received the highest monthly rainfall of 110 cm and 98 cm respectively.

Tamil Nadu finished 2025 with 102.7 cm of annual rainfall; this is 12% higher than the state’s average rainfall of 92 cm.

RMC also predicts that fog/haze will prevail in the state and Puducherry in the early morning hours and the minimum temperature will fall two to three degrees Celsius below normal in a few areas by Wednesday.
