The Kannur First Class Judicial Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) activists arrested in connection with the alleged attack on Health Minister Veena George during a protest at Kannur railway station on February 25.
The court rejected the application after hearing the detailed defenses of both parties. The defendant will appear in court again on March 5.

The defense argued that the incident at Kannur railway station “was merely a black flag protest and did not amount to attempted murder”. He argued that the charge of attempted murder was unsustainable and exaggerated. The defense also pointed out that the Minister appeared and spoke on television channels even though it was reported that he was unwell and could not make a statement.
The defense also argued that police neither found any weapons nor identified what was allegedly used in the incident.
Opposing the claim, the prosecutor’s office stated that more CCTV footage needed to be examined and that other people were involved in the incident and asked for the defendant to be taken into custody.
The prosecution claimed that the Minister may have used a small weapon and that pressure was applied to the Minister’s neck during the protest. The prosecution insisted that custodial interrogation was necessary for the continuation of the investigation.
Accepting the prosecution’s claim that further investigation and detention were necessary, the court rejected the KSU activists’ request for bail.
