The prize is determined by an independent five-person committee at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo, while members are selected by the Norwegian parliament and connected to the country’s political leaders through the process.
The current chairman of the Nobel Committee is Jorgen Watne Frydnes, a human rights activist who works with Medecins Sans Frontieres, also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, and other non-governmental groups.
Last year’s award was given to Nihon Hidankyo, who survived the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
Previous winners were Iranian equality and women’s rights activist Narges Mohammadi and human rights defender Ales Bialiatski from Belarus. In 2021, this award was awarded to journalists Maria Ressa from the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov from Russia.
