Residents in sleepy UK village fume over ‘monstrous’ indoor reservoir | UK | News
The residents of Sleepy Springwell Village in Tyne and Wear are in their arms after building only one stone throw from a large indoor reservoir houses. The rising building, which measures 100m x 75m and reaches a height of 9m, is equivalent to the size of the three football fields. Built to hold 9.5 million gallons of water, this has a capacity of providing 50,000 home with 3.4 miles underground pipes.
Studies on the Springwell Service reservoir of £ 26 million started in June 2023, expected to be completed this year, but the setbacks pushed the end date until 2026. Northumbrian juice initially promised to cover the grass to mix the roof with the surrounding view. However, the air images show a large roof covered with 2,400 tons of gray gravel and amaze the natives.

Chris Green expressed his disappointment: “They don’t promise their intentions, or they don’t plan to return this area to the original state of the wildlife – to the original state.
He continued: “They placed a very large structure in the slope and we were directed to believe that it would look natural as they started. Now there are tons of gravel on those who resemble three football fields.”
He added another local resident: “It probably looks like a parking lot and at least it looks like a Soviet -style nuclear shelter. The water company had the chance to make the roof a wild life paradise or a grassy hill, but instead of a look at it, just a look at it.
“This is a very beautiful area, rich in wildlife and diversity, and then there is this terrible concrete box that stands in the middle of all of them.”
Residents also claim that they dug thousands of tons of land and stones from trucks and excavators.
Northumbrian water defended the decision to change grass on a reservoir roof and said that the following tank was made to “protect the integrity”.
A spokesman said: “We have received industry guidance from the UK Water Industry research, which recommends a pebble or shingle roofing as the best application to maintain water quality in the reservoir.
“Gravel offers superior performance in preserving the integrity of the reservoir tank compared to grass roofs. Change is not about cost.
“We have been honest about the change in the roof and the need for people, and we work with the inhabitants throughout the project to find ways to reduce the effect of the reservoir.”
