Victoria Park stadium design revealed

“When we did that analysis we were able to look at the amount of cutting and filling and that affected it, but it’s also about putting ourselves in a position to preserve as much of the park as possible.

“So the stadium is part of the park but it’s not the whole opportunity and so there are still opportunities around the park for matchday activation, activities that are completely separate from the stadium itself.”

Hassall chief executive Lucy O’Driscoll said she did not expect the final stadium design to deviate too much from the vision announced on Monday.

“We really spent a lot of time thinking about this particular concept and the idea of having some open spots and having something that really speaks to the climate and culture of Queensland,” he said.

“I think we’ll really stick with that concept. The devil is in the details; how the roof will be detailed, some of the landmarks, where the elevator cores will go – all of that could change.

“But I think the general concept that this is a really open, democratic, permeable stadium is something that we will definitely fight for throughout the process because that is our core concept and we will stick to that.”

Rosemary O’Hagan, a spokeswoman for Save Victoria Park, said the images were “the latest slice of greenwashed computer imagery” and were not real.

“What is real is ancient trees, rolling hills and native wildlife that the government plans to destroy in what could become one of the most environmentally disastrous Olympic Games in history,” he said.

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the Save Victoria Park group was “crazy”.

“The Save Victoria Park group is just a bunch of NIMBYs who don’t want anything to happen,” he said.

“They believe this park has been operational for years. It wasn’t. This was a golf course. Before it was a golf course, it was a dump for God’s sake.”

Bleijie said that excavation work will begin in the middle of the year and if it can be carried out within the current budget, the stadium’s planned capacity of 63,000 people can be increased.
