Inside the world’s abandoned ‘most secretive hotel’ where nobody has ever stayed | World | News

A building rising on the most hidden city of the world lies in a building that is not finished and empty as it has been for decades. Visiting Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, is almost impossible for the majority of people, as it controls the dictatorship entrance and rarely gives tourist visas. Even when access is allowed, travelers are intensely monitored and restricted from free discovering the city. Therefore, for most, the only idea we enter into the country is among the images in Google Earth and very little and very little.
Ryugyong Hotel is the tallest building in North Korea and stops at an impressive height of 1,080 feet – much longer than London’s 1.016 -meter part. The construction of this pyramid -shaped skyscraper, which is generally called “Doom Hotel”, began in 1987, but so far there is no single guest. In fact, since construction began, the network has been invented worldwide and the Berlin Wall has fallen. The building was stopped in 1992 when an economic crisis of North Korea’s disintegration of the Soviet Union entered into an economic crisis. For more than a decade, it has stopped at the top of the building, but without any window or internal fittings. Construction started in 2008 and the exterior was completed in 2011.
The construction of Ryugyong Hotel was intended to be completed in 1992 for President Kim Il Sung for the 80th birthday. If this had been accomplished, he would have kept the title of the highest hotel in the world. Before the Goldin Finance 117, it was considered the longest empty building in the world.
According to different sources, the building initially aimed to host five doner restaurants and 3,000 or 7,665 guest rooms. In 2008, North Korean officials said that the hotel would be completed by 2012 and would coincide with Kim’s birth.
In November 2012, international hotel operator Kempinski announced that it will manage the hotel, which is expected to be partially opened in mid -2013. However, in March 2013, plans to open the hotel were suspended.
In April 2018, a large LED screen was installed on a side used to show propaganda animations and film scenes. In 2024, the North Korean government reportedly began to look for a casino operator who wanted to complete the building in exchange for profit by a casino. However, gambling is prohibited in North Korea, so demand is low.
Unlike most modern skyscrapers with steel due to impressive strength / weight ratio, the entire structure of Ryugyong is made of concrete.
“If you look at most of the construction in North Korea, the buildings are made of concrete – the entire industry is largely based on this material,” Chua said B1M. “Related to the technology transfer between the communist states in Europe and DPRK.
“For example, East German engineers and architects participated in the early city projects in Pyongyang and planning, so what he did was to leave the prefabian panels and on -site concrete construction methods.”
In addition to the high -steel cost that North Korea can try to meet, the country is familiar with concrete produces scary aesthetics. The concrete is incredibly heavy, so any structure made of material requires a large footprint and a conical design to avoid a heavy heavy tower. The skyscraper of 1,080 meters has three bleeding with a length of 330 feet and 59 feet wide.
Although it may seem very impressive out, Ryugyong’s inside is another story. It continues to be an empty, concrete shell and will remain like this for a while unless it cannot create a kind of foreign investment to make North Korean work.
