State prosecutors told the court the case was “something straight out of movies or TV shows” compared to the abduction of Cleo Smith, who was taken from a campsite near Carnarvon in November 2021.

On Friday, Rafferty told the court it would be “an insult to justice” not to sentence Anthony to prison for the incident, despite hearing that he suffered from schizophrenia and that his addiction to cannabis and butane led to psychosis.
Anthony, who later pleaded guilty to seven charges related to the incident, told police he was in the midst of a paranoid delusion, believing aliens were everywhere and that he needed to save the children.
He was later charged with two counts of detaining a child by force/fraud, one count of deprivation of liberty, two counts of aggravated burglary, one count of disguised to commit a crime, and one count of improperly recording a child.
He was sentenced to a total of eight years in prison until his arrest in March 2023 and will be eligible for parole in March 2029.
A lifetime restraining order was also granted to protect both children from Anthony.
