‘Wanted to be an architect…’: CJI Gavai breaks down remembering father, shares why he chose law instead

On Friday, the Nagpur District Court Bar Association event in the heart of the heart, India Chief Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, the late father and law career talked about the reason behind the reason.

Currently, India’s 52th chief justice, Gavai said he once dreamed of being an architect. But it was his father’s request to study law that changed the course of his life.

“I wanted to be an architect,” he said, “But my father had different dreams. He wanted to be a lawyer, but he could not do it because he was arrested for participating in the freedom movement.”

A road built on the victim

Tears and sound in his eyes trembling Gavai, his family opened up about the struggles. He was deeply respected to his family, especially his father and his mother and aunt who ruled the households in difficult times, dedicated to Dr Br Br Ambedkar’s ideals.

“My father gave himself to Ambedkar’s service. All my responsibility fell to my mother and aunt,” he said.


Gavai shared how his father predicted his once. When his name was suggested for a Supreme Court judge, his father told him: “If you remain as a lawyer, you will only chase the money. But if you dominate, you will walk the path of Ambedkar and serve the society.” Unfortunately, Gavai’s father passed away in 2015 years ago without chief justice. “I’m glad my mother is still with us,” he added.

A lighter moment in court

To alleviate his mood, Gavai shared a funny moment from his time as a judge. Bollywood star remembered a check splashing case containing Hema Malini.

“There was a very big crowd in court that day, just to see Hema Malini. We couldn’t help, we couldn’t enjoy the moment,” he said.

A moment in the works?

Gavai also implied to write a moment after retiring in November this year. “There are many personal and professional stories worth sharing,” he said.
