Morisset, NSW: M1 shut after truck transporting onions crashes, burst into flames

A highway in NSW’s Hunter Region was closed for hours, causing major delays after a truck carrying onions crashed and burst into flames.

The semi-trailer crashed into the guardrail under the Mandalong Road overpass on the M1 at Morisset at around 11.30pm on Sunday.

The truck caught fire and diesel fuel spilled from the vehicle.

Fire and Rescue NSW worked to extinguish the fire and contain the diesel spill.

The statement said, “The trailer was carrying onions and was destroyed.”

“There were too many onions. It’s enough to make your eyes water. Good thing we’re wearing face masks.”

The M1 southbound remains closed and traffic is at a standstill for miles as emergency services work to clear the road.

“Motorists can take the southbound exit from Mandalong Road, turn left, then turn around at the roundabout at Gateway Blvd and return to the highway,” the Transport NSW website reads.
