Warning to Brits driving in Europe – little known £5.50 rule | World | News

While the British flocked to European countries for summer holidays, drivers were warned to check if they needed an important document. In addition to other new passport controls and documents, DVLA made basic advice to drivers and called on to check if they needed an international driving permit (IDP). According to the Government website, the permission you may need depends on which country you visit and how long you stay.

In addition to being 18 years of age and over, Brits will have to have a large British or Northern Irish driver’s license to get IDP. For those with paper license, you must update to a photocardic license to drive or get an IDP. The cost of a permit is less than 5.50 £ and in three different types: 1926, 1949 and 1968.

The permission of 1926 or 1949 lasts 12 months, and the 1968 leave lasts for 3 years, or whichever comes before your UK driver’s license ends.

The type of IDP Brits depends on which country you visit – if you plan to travel more than one place, you may need multiple IDPs.

You may need to get one if you have a paper license in EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Lichtenşiste, who have a photocardic license published in the UK.

If your license is published on Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or Man Island, you may also need an IDP.

For those who plan to move abroad instead of a visit, you do not need to apply for an international license. Instead, you should either change your UK license or consult a new language in the country you move.

It is also very important to investigate different overseas driving rules, including local speed limits and beverage driving laws, before traveling abroad.

Depending on the country you visit, you may need extra equipment such as a reflective jacket and a warning triangle required in many countries.

In some European cities, emission stickers (permits) are also required – you may need to buy these weeks before going abroad.

In some countries, headlight converter stickers and UK labels may also be required.
