Wayne Rooney received an amazing phone from Paul Scholes to persuade him to join Manchester United.
Speaking in the last episode of Podcast the Wayne Rooney Show, the former England captain, why he almost went to Newcastle from the process of joining United and attracted attention from abroad.
“When I was still in Everton, I sat at home one night and watched Coronation Street and my home phone. So I answered, Paul Scholes,” he said. “For example, ‘Wazza, Scholyes… Will you sign us?’ I just sat there, what’s going on here?
At the age of 18, Rooney joined Manchester United from Everton at the age of 18, but he said that Sir Alex Ferguson would ideally wait for him to hire him.
Red Devils had to move quickly to prevent him from joining Newcastle instead.
“If I’m honest, I think Alex Ferguson wanted to wait for another year. And then he continued to enter Newcastle, and if United didn’t sign me, I would go to Newcastle.”
“Came to the last day and then [Everton chairman] Bill Kenwright would not send forms. And Bill, God rested him, he was very emotional. And I’m a local young man who plays for Everton from Liverpool. It was too big. And in fact, when he was in the Old Trafford, he put his mother on the phone, then got on the phone and the phone was crying. “
Rooney joined United on the last day of the transfer, and the agreement came so quickly that he wore the jumper of his wife Coleen’s cousin while making the move.
“I was quite cooled and there were too many presses trying to follow me, RO Rooney said.
“Actually, I was staying in Coleen’s uncle in Liverpool. And we sat down the night before the last day, we had a Chinese, there were a few glasses of wine, and then I didn’t have clothes there.
“So, Jumper Coleen’s cousin, which I signed for Manchester United, was the jumper of the cousin! Yes, it shows how ready I am.”
