The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership in West Bengal has accused the Trinamool Congress government of delaying the census implementation in West Bengal so that the state’s ruling party could “take political advantage from vote bank politics”.

This claim comes at a time when political excitement is rising in the state due to the Election Commission of India’s upcoming SIR (Special Intensive Revision) despite opposition from the Trinamool Congress.

State BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya said on social media: “The Trinamool government is apparently delaying this process to gain political advantage in vote bank politics. Instead of prioritizing the interests of the common people, it is prioritizing achieving its own political goals.”

Mr. Bhattacharya claimed that while other States in the country have finalized their administrative boundaries as per the central government’s guidelines and started census activities, West Bengal is the only state that is yet to issue notification for census.

“Despite a gazette notification being issued on June 16, 2025, the Trinamool government is moving slowly, raising concerns that the interests of the general public are being ignored,” the BJP leader said.

Mr. Bhattacharya said that although a gazette notification was issued on June 16, 2025, the Trinamool government was moving slowly, raising concerns that the interests of the people were being ignored.

The allegations regarding the postponement of the census have emerged at a time when the Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to hold a conference on SIR on October 22-23 with the participation of all Chief Electoral Officers.

Meanwhile, the BJP leadership in the state also alleged that fake birth and death certificates were issued from a government-run hospital at Kharibari in North Bengal, bordering Bangladesh.

Referring to the reports, the State BJP chief demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation conduct an investigation into the matter. “Foreigners are obtaining Indian citizenship documents through fake certificates. This is not only a violation of the law but also a direct threat to India’s sovereignty. Administrative apathy and corrupt governance of the state government has created a very dire situation at the border,” he added.

Siliguri BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh raised the issue and wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 19, alleging that 850 fake birth certificates were issued at Khairbari Rural Hospital. Stating that the development raises questions regarding the internal security of the country and that the State government cannot prevent such malpractices, the BJP legislator filed a case against those behind such certificates.
