Virginia Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones once fantasized about shooting the Virginia House speaker in texts with another lawmaker, but anyone relying on The New York Times for information would have no idea.

Last week, text messages sent by Jones to a lawmaker in 2022 emerged showing him discussing “putting two bullets in the head” of then-Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert; He even suggested that if Gilbert witnessed the murder of his own children, it would encourage him to turn to politics. Other controversies emerged, including allegations that Jones said shootings against civilians would decrease if more police officers were killed, claims he denied. But Jones continued: “Three men, two bullets. Gilbert, Hitler and Pol Pot. Two bullets in Gilbert’s head.”

Jones wasn’t done condemning the House leader.

“Spoiler: Put Gilbert on a crew with two of the worst people you know, and he takes both bullets every time,” he wrote.

Coyner tried to end the conversation again: “Jay. Please stop.”

“Hahaha. Okay, okay,” he replied.

Jones apologized for the messages in question, calling them “disgraceful and embarrassing” and said he had personally contacted Gilbert and his family.
