We Tories could have lost better – we must do these 3 things to win again | Politics | News

Only one year ago, 125 TORY deputy, including me, lost our seats. After 14 years of power – and especially a turbulent last stretch – a labor force victory seemed inevitable. We looked tired, divided and without a clear direction. The tribal bad discipline has repeatedly undermined the efforts of Rishi Sun, to fix the ship, and earned the Labor Party effectively. What surprised many of us was the scale of this win – the majority of Tony Blair’s 1997 landslide. He felt terrible.
Labor played ultra safely: Little said, remained low and won a majority of 174 people. When I look back, it is clear that conservatives can be lost better. We may have limited the damage with more unity, humility and purpose. Unfortunately, tribal groups were already organizing leadership stalls after the election in the middle of the general elections.
A few weeks later, Rishi invited 125 people to drink at Carlton Club. Rather than a wake, there was a clear collective spirit: in our bellies, we still had a passion for fire and return. It’s not over yet.
The depth of the ministry experience in that room was impressive. There are now older Conservative MPs than those present. When the party returns to the government, this broad Whitehall experience will make sense of fully based on the pool.
Labour’s election strategy watched a familiar formula – we have used ourselves many times. Out of your base and you can win. Move too far or right and you cannot get the numbers. Disraeli, Gladstone, Baldwin, Churchill, Wilson, Macmillan, Thatcher, Blair and Cameron built majority.
However, when it comes to power, you should make difficult decisions in national interests, not at the party. This formula only works if at least one great party connects with England. Today, neither of them looks like that. Just as we have encountered economic and security pressures, we enter the multi -party political world.
If the mainstream parties do not offer reasonable solutions, populism wins. That was on the continent. And now it takes place here, because reform is still re -grouping as a cautious workers’ government and a conservative party – but under the pressure of drifting to the right.
With any precaution, these are test times. Global challenges are stubbornly familiar, although not more complex than a year ago. The erosion of the rules -based order, the war in Ukraine, China’s economic equipment, illegal migration and instability about climate … All voters feed the anger that the disappointment and populist movements are rapidly exploited.
Here are Reality Control: less than 10% of children aged 18-30 in the 2024 general elections. If we are serious about rebuilding, we should not be drawn to our base and hope that voters will come to us. We need to modernize and re -connect with a generation that sees us as more and more out of contact.
You gain a different perspective from outside Westminster. The loss of election was not just political, but also revealed deep structural, generation and ideological problems. We cannot be opposed for the sake of the opposition. If the conservative party will survive and develop, it should reform, rebuild the reliability and be resistant to the future.
Here are three ideas that will help you take us there:
1. Put England first
Submitting to party interests can make the base happy, but does not expand our objection. Our leadership election rules should change – to give the last promise to conservative deputies. Let’s be honest. Currently, disproportionate impact lies with a narrow, older, more ideological membership, curvature leadership competitions and feeding department.
We must rely on deputies to choose the leaders who can win the country, not just a party. This will bring more fresh thoughts on issues such as Brexit and support logical policies such as supporting the welfare bill before drowning the taxpayer by Labour’s left wing at great cost. This is adult politics.
2. clarify what we represent
Let’s keep it simple. Entrepreneur – A belief in free markets, which takes risks, business creators and supports innovation.
Opportunity – To ensure that everyone has the chance to succeed independently of the background.
Responsibility – Living in our vehicles and encouraging personal and civilian responsibility in work, prosperity and citizenship.
3. Take back the center to the right.
We must determine where we live in the political range. Flirting with reform will not increase our support. It alienates moderates without transforming disappointment. Let us remain faithful to our formula that won the elections: reliable, center -right, pragmatic conservatism.
The general election may come earlier than expected. England needs a strong conservative party. This reform begins with the courage of reflection and change.
Let’s interact again with people other than Westminster Bubble.
