Boy, 15, charged with murder of nine-year-old Aria Thorpe in Weston-Super-Mare

Avon and Somerset Police said a 15-year-old boy will appear in court on Wednesday accused of murdering a nine-year-old girl in Weston-super-Mare.

Schoolgirl Aria Thorpe was pronounced dead after police were called to a residence in Lime Close, Mead Vale, in the Worle area of ​​the town on Monday night.

Shortly after the police arrived at the scene at 18.12, the child, whose name cannot be given for legal reasons, was detained in the area.

Police said preliminary findings from the autopsy showed that the girl’s tragic death occurred as a result of a single stab wound.

On Wednesday morning police said the boy had been charged with murder and would appear at Bristol Magistrates’ Court.

Police also officially named the girl Aria.

Inspector Jen Appleford said: “This continues to be an incredibly difficult time for Aria’s family, who we continue to support and update as part of our investigation. “It is impossible to adequately describe how traumatic the past 36 hours have been for them and we would like to reiterate their request for confidentiality in the strongest possible terms.

“The tragic loss of such a young girl has caused great shock and sadness, with a deep sense of loss felt throughout the community. We are working closely with partner agencies and schools in the Weston area to ensure those affected can access any support they need.”

Supt Appleford said the police investigation had “continued apace” since the girl’s death.

He added: “We are grateful to local residents for their patience while we inspect the area. This work will need to continue over the next few days, but if anyone has any concerns please do not hesitate to speak to officers at the cordon who will be happy to help.”
