Dylan Mulvaney calls Anne Boleyn casting a ‘miracle’ after controversy

Dylan Mulvaney, Broadway’s “Six MusicalsThe transgender activist called the opportunity a “miracle” as the backlash to her casting led to the show locking down its social media.

The musical was marketed as a feminist pop celebration of women’s history and “21st century girl power”. Mulvaney’s casting sparked controversy online; critics argued that the female-centered production sidelined female actors by casting the influencer as Anne Boleyn.

The backlash became intense enough that the show restricted its presence on social media. production X locked his accountbecame inaccessible to non-followers and disabled comments on Mulvaney’s Instagram posts announcing the casting.

Mulvaney addressed the controversy as part of his own speech “Girl Days” video series documenting gender transition on social media.

“Being transgender in 2026, when this world is working against us in every way,” Mulvaney said in a minutes-long video message posted online.

“I consider it a miracle for me to be able to walk onto the Broadway stage as Anne Boleyn and portray the role of an iconic, historical character in a show so rooted in celebrating womanhood,” she said, noting that Monday was her first rehearsal for the show.

Mulvaney also acknowledged the “privilege” that helped secure the role and briefly referenced the Bud Light controversy that made him a national figure. In April 2023, Mulvaney posted videos showing Bud Light sending him a package of beer with his face on it.

In January 2024, FOX Business reported that Bud Light sales dropped nearly 30% in the months following the campaign. This backlash became one of the most prominent corporate culture clashes in recent years, and Bud Light eventually lost its position as America’s best-selling beer.

“If I had to go viral and find myself at the center of a far-right media storm and spend many years and tears wondering why this happened and trying desperately to get back to what I once loved, which was theatre, I would do it all over again if it meant getting on stage,” Mulvaney added.

Supporters of the cast argued that the musical was never historically accurate, accusing critics of transphobia. Mulvaney is scheduled to begin performances at the Lena Horne Theater in New York City on February 16.
