“This morning’s story showed us the recipes for success. It’s pretty simple really, great teaching, strong leadership, inclusive practice, culturally responsive approaches and a focus on student well-being and high achievement.”
Winton paid special tribute to the winners of another inaugural award, with the award for excellence in early childhood education awarded to Karratha Primary School.
He said the award was important because it recognized the important work teachers do during the “critical foundation years” of a child’s education.

Another important award was the award for excellence in teaching and learning in primary schools, which was awarded to Campbell Primary School.
Principal Lynne Bates told her students she hoped they would watch the awards via a livestream of the event.
“You deserve it. You always work hard to achieve the best for yourself and I couldn’t be more proud of you,” he said.
“I also want to point out that you are extraordinary, I mean the extraordinary staff I work with, and I couldn’t be more proud of who you are and what you do for our school.”
The winner of the award for excellence in teaching and learning for secondary schools was Ocean Reef High School, while the award for excellence in school leadership went to John Curtin College of the Arts.
Excellence in disability and inclusion was awarded to Bob Hawke College, and excellence in cultural sensitivity was awarded to Wiluna Remote Community School, located near Meekatharra in the state’s Goldfields-Esperance region.
The winners of each category received $20,000, while the other finalists received $5,000 each.
