Most people who encountered the Hart family thought they were nearly perfect.
Parents Sarah and Jennifer were keen to show others how caring and forward-thinking they were and how they devoted their lives to their six adopted children.
Both their social media accounts were filled with photos of smiling faces, family vacations and other meticulously orchestrated moments of happiness.
Friends often commented on their devotion to their children and the strength of family ties.
But beneath the meticulously crafted image lay a level of domination and sheer brutality that culminated in one of the most disturbing murders in contemporary American history.
In the early morning hours of March 26, 2018, the Harts’ SUV plummeted 100 feet from the top of a cliff on the California coast, landing upside down on an isolated beach below. Inside the vehicle were Sarah and Jennifer Hart, both 38, and their six adopted children: Markis, 19; Hannah, 16; Jeremiah, 14; Abigail, 14; Ciera, 12; and Devonte, 15.

Five bodies were recovered from the wreckage and shoreline. The body of 15-year-old Devonte, who was believed dead, was never found. reports the mirror.
From the beginning, investigators investigating the case suspected that this was not an accident, especially after observing that there were no tire tracks on the road.
Information obtained from the vehicle later revealed that the vehicle accelerated sharply from a stationary position before hurtling over the edge of the cliff. A nearby camper told jurors he heard an engine starting violently moments before the fatal fall.
The subsequent coroner’s inquest confirmed the worst fears. The 14-person jury unanimously ruled the deaths a murder-suicide and concluded that Jennifer Hart deliberately drove the car off the cliff, causing the deaths of herself, her wife and their six children.
As researchers dug deeper, the carefully crafted image of “perfect parents” quickly collapsed, revealing a much worse reality.
In the hours and days before the fatal crash, the couple had been researching various methods of mass suicide online. Their searches included questions about the lethality of Benadryl and what it feels like to choke.

Toxicology reports revealed that Sarah Hart and some of the children had significant amounts of diphenhydramine, the sedating ingredient in Benadryl, in their systems.
It turned out that Jennifer Hart, who was behind the wheel, was also over the legal alcohol limit.
Unfortunately, if the authorities had intervened earlier, this horrific mass murder could have been prevented.
Just days earlier, child welfare authorities in Washington state, where the family resides, had reopened an ongoing investigation after Devonte knocked on a neighbor’s door, asking for food and claiming his parents had withheld food.
Following this report, social workers tried to contact the family three days before the accident and on the very day they died.
This wasn’t the first time concerns had been raised. For years, teachers, neighbors, and family acquaintances had reported similar problems that revealed a disturbing pattern: harsh punishments, food withholding, physical mistreatment, and children who appeared frightened and isolated.
In 2010, Sarah Hart pleaded guilty to assaulting one of the children and was found guilty of a misdemeanor. But despite these numerous warning signs in many states, the family remained intact.
Jennifer Hart worked tirelessly to manage public perception on social media through Facebook updates and photos, presenting the family as happy, socially conscious, and caring.
One of the boys, Devonte, even briefly gained international recognition after he was photographed embracing a police officer during a demonstration in 2014.
Investigators later determined that the couple believed authorities were on the verge of removing the children from custody.
According to evidence presented at the inquest, the decision to kill the family was motivated by the belief that if they could not have the children, no one else would be allowed to have them.
