The Prime Minister said, “We are deeply saddened to learn that former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has passed away in Dhaka. We express our sincere condolences to her family and the entire people of Bangladesh. May Almighty Allah give her family the strength to bear this tragic loss.”

Begum Khaleda Zia died in the early hours of Tuesday while receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. He was 80 years old.

According to the BNP’s statement on Facebook, Zia passed away at around 6 am (local time), shortly after the morning prayer.

“Khaleda Zia passed away around 6:00 am, just after the morning prayers,” the BNP statement said, adding: “We pray for the eternal peace of her soul and ask everyone to pray for her deceased soul.”

Yunus said his long political journey dedicated to national prosperity, people-oriented leadership and firm determination despite political differences has consistently shown the way forward.

“With her death, Bangladesh has lost an experienced and proven stateswoman,” he said.
