NFL news: Bears star Caleb Williams responds to nail polish critics

Caleb Williams’ signature look continues to stand out.

The Chicago Bears quarterback has embraced bold nail polish in recent years.

Williams, who was selected with the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, responded to those who criticized his manicure choice. She also explained the origins of nail polish and said it raises awareness of causes close to her.

While Williams recalled painting her nails for the first time during a visit to the nail salon with her ex-girlfriend, she also noted her mother’s career as a nail technician.

“One day, I was with one of my exes and we were going to the nail salon,” she said in a recent program. “Rush Podcast” Hosted by NFL defensive end Maxx Crosby.

Williams ignored the criticism. “I know who I am,” he said, noting that the manicure had a dual purpose, including trolling competitors.

“And so I did that, and it ended up being three nails, four nails, five, six… and at a certain point I was actually doing that because you can’t write stuff on your tape. You can’t do all those things,” he said. “And I was doing ‘F— Texas’ with the horns down symbol… It was like I was trolling.”

“I love trolling. I love it,” he said with a laugh, but said he “has to be careful about that now.”

Although the 24-year-old actor has no problem with criticism, he prefers to respond “intelligently”.

“Someone’s got to check them out, some of these guys. You know, all the analysts and stuff. I’ll check them out. I’ve got no problem.”

Pushing the trolling aspect aside, Williams now chooses designs that support meaningful causes.

“I wrote a mental health number and a suicide prevention number on them,” she said of the nail art she’s chosen in the past. “I did breast cancer awareness, it’s like wearing pink cleats and a pink headband.”

“I just have gel on my nails,” she continued. “People have a certain feeling about it in a masculine sport. I’m not giving f—s to be honest with you, I could care less.”

The NFL imposes uniform restrictions on game day. Williams sticks to the rules while still wearing nail polish to support her causes.

“I’m going to keep doing this. This is something unique for me,” he said.
