What Are Heavyweight Torpedoes, What Makes Them Deadly – India Seals $2.1 Billion Deal With Italy | World News

New Delhi: Indian Navy is set to purchase 48 advanced heavyweight torpedoes from Italy in the next two years. It is aimed to increase the combat power of six Calvari class submarines. These torpedoes are more capable than previous generations and promise an increase in India’s underwater attack capability.

The government has finalized a deal worth $2.1 billion (Rs 1,896 crore) with Italy for the supply of these state-of-the-art torpedoes, scheduled to be delivered between 2028 and 2030.

A contract was signed with WASS Submarine Systems SRL, which is considered an international leader in torpedo systems. Designed to neutralize all types of threats both underwater and on the surface, these torpedoes bring cutting-edge technology to India’s naval arsenal.

Details of the Italian Agreement

The deal is part of a larger Rs 4.666 billion procurement package for the Indian armed forces, which includes advanced carbines for the Army as well as torpedoes for the Navy.

Beyond torpedoes, the agreement also includes additional equipment for Calvari-class submarines.

The addition of these heavy torpedoes is set to increase the offensive capability of the six existing Calvari-class (Scorpene) submarines.

According to the agreement, deliveries will take place from April 2028 to early 2030. These submarines are part of Project 75, which is being built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai with technology transferred from the French Naval Group under the Make in India initiative. The entire project is worth over Rs 23,562 crore.

Features of Heavy Torpedoes

These Italian-made torpedoes were designed for stealth, long-range engagement and the challenges of modern naval warfare. Unlike older chemical-powered systems, they feature intelligent guidance, advanced sonar and the ability to carry heavy loads.

A Deadly Weapon Beneath the Waves

Heavy torpedoes are among the most lethal underwater weapons that can be deployed not only from submarines but also from warships. They are capable of neutralizing enemy submarines and attacking large surface ships, effectively turning them into seabed targets. Their advanced sonar systems and superior payload make them extremely effective against all types of maritime threats.

With these new torpedoes, India’s naval firepower will be stronger than ever, increasing the operational range and deterrence capability of the Calvari-class submarines and securing the country’s waters against modern maritime threats.
