IndiGo taps former British Airways chief William Walsh as CEO, days after Pieter Elbers’ exit

Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo on Tuesday (March 31) appointed William Walsh, current chief executive of the International Air Transport Association and former chairman of British Airways, as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
William Walsh’s tenure as global airline industry president will end on July 31 and he is expected to join IndiGo by August 3 at the latest, the airline said in a statement.
This development comes just days after Pieter Elbers resigned from his post following the airline’s worst flight crisis in December 2025.
William Walsh is currently the Director General of IATA (International Air Transport Association) and was previously the CEO of British Airways and IAG (International Airlines Group, a holding company that owns Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling), IndiGo said in a statement.
Welcoming IndiGo, William Walsh Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said: “I am thrilled to have Willie at the helm of IndiGo. He is an outstanding global aviation leader with an excellent track record of outstanding leadership across a variety of airlines. His experience in managing large-scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics makes him the ideal candidate to strengthen and guide IndiGo for continued growth in an ever-evolving and competitive international aviation environment.”
“His appointment will open a new chapter for IndiGo as it continues its journey in one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world.”
