When Deepinder Goyal asked Albinder Dhindsa to leave twice after Blinkit’s acquisition

While Deepinder Goyal will resign from his post as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of Eternal effective February 1, he will be replaced by Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa. Let’s take a look at the time when Goyal asked Dhindsa to leave amid the recent management changes.

In an interview with podcaster Raj Shamani, Deepinder Goyal discussed the potential conflict arising from Zomato’s acquisition of Blinkit in 2022.

When Goyal asks Dhindsa to resign

“Right after I got Blinkit, I asked him (Albinder) to leave. I told him, ‘You’re not going to be able to cut this.’ He said okay. This happened twice in that time period and we initiated the transition,” Goyal said on the podcast.

Founded by Albinder Dhindsa in 2013, Blinkit, previously called Grofers, was acquired by Zomato in 2022. 4,447 crore in an all-stock deal. Following the acquisition, Grofers rebranded as Blinkit and moved to a 10-minute delivery model.

Explaining the reason why he wanted Dhindsa to leave, Goyal said that he often commented on how things were done at Grofers, which he did not appreciate.

“Can we please stop saying this? You can say this is what we used to do, but let’s understand our new job,” Goyal said.

While expressing his hopes for Dhindsa’s appointment, Goyal recalled the incident during his podcast days before announcing his resignation as CEO of Eternal.

Deepinder Goyal’s resignation

According to a letter sent to shareholders, on Wednesday, January 21, Goyal announced that he was resigning to pursue new ideas that he had been interested in for some time.

He added: “Blinkit remains our biggest growth opportunity and will continue to be Albi’s top priority. Our decentralized structure, where each business has a CEO with full ownership, remains unchanged and will help Albi execute it well.”

Effective February 1, current Blinkit CEO Albinder Singh Dhindsa will serve as Eternal’s Chief Executive Officer and Key Management Personnel.

Prior to founding Blinkit, Albinder served as Head of International Expansion at Zomato, where he oversaw the company’s global expansion. He graduated from IIT Delhi with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Civil Engineering and subsequently earned an MBA from Columbia University, New York.
