When should a referee be contacted?
Now I’m retired, but I really want to put an old situation from my business life to “bed”.
Some time ago, I found a job as a manager in a government instrumental that survived a major change. One of my first tasks was to hire my direct reports. I made the built -in advertisement and I got a few answers from the applicants I knew. However, I had never heard – their presentations were first class and their real previous experience seemed unbeatable. They listed a senior executive that I knew and trusted in their references. I decided to call this manager.
In this scenario, management may be a good reason to adopt such a conservative approach.Credit: John Shakespeare
I was told that this candidate’s presentation was a package of lies. I thought I had heard myself before and I didn’t waste time to interview them. The end of the story is as far as I was worried about. However, the candidate complained and argued that the interview should be done. The top management declared that I was wrong to follow the reference and that all the future talks would take place before approaching the arbitrators. As a result, I made serious mistakes and I was guilty.
I want your thoughts.
In your longer E -mail, you have stated that you are new to recruit during your appointment to the administrator position. To some extent, some professional advertising were dealing with libbing and you were accidentally ignoring recruitment traditions (more suddenly).
As far as I can collect, you’ve contacted the referee, not because you have doubts – you didn’t think the resume was too good to be real – but this candidate was the only candidate you were not familiar with. You wanted some background before moving on to the next stage of the process.
Before entering this process, management should have such policies.
Considering all this, my first response I read your E -Post was that the decision of the top management that you were wrong appeared harsh. Yes, it was unusual – traditional wisdom shows that the referees’ recruitment process was at the end not only at the beginning but at the beginning – but it was a logical decision approved by what you discover.
However, after talking to some human resources professionals, I realized that the administration could have a good reason to adopt such a conservative approach. What I have reached is an indefinite congress – you do not contact a referee until the decision maker – it is actually a matter of practicality.
