Where is the freeze? Delhi-NCR pines for classic cold wave, IMD says THIS

Contrary to the usual trend, Delhi does not experience cold waves in December. The temperature in Delhi-NCR is likely to be warmer than normal next week, IMD said in its latest report. Northern regions like J&K, Ladakh and others will see temperatures below 5 degrees.

IMD predicts hotter than normal weather in Delhi

Delhi takes on different layers during the winter months with hot tea, tandoori snacks, festive illuminations and more. But while Delhiites have been waiting for months to experience that winter comfort again, this December has left millions disappointed as the NCR region is yet to experience the winter cold of the season.

The maximum temperature at Lodhi Road between Wednesday and Thursday morning (8:30 am) was 25.4 degrees Celsius, 2.4 degrees Celsius above average, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data on Thursday. The minimum temperature was also 8.6 degrees Celsius, 0.6 degrees Celsius above average.

The last month of the year generally remains colder; Cold waves spread in the evening and at night, and people feel cool days. Contrary to the usual tradition, the weather in Delhi has remained warmer than normal so far and will remain the same next week as well, according to the IMD.

Why isn’t Delhi-NCR witnessing cold waves?

Speaking to NDTV, Dr. a senior scientist from the India Meteorological Department. “The increase in cold weather is due to Western Disturbances as these bring dry, cold northwesterly winds to Delhi and parts of Northwest India. There has been no active Western Disturbance so far this season, so no cold wave has been recorded in Delhi-NCR and surrounding areas yet,” Naresh Kumar said.

According to the IMD forecast, there is a high probability of a disturbance coming from the west on December 13, but it is said to be weak. IMD expects this event to bring rain to parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Dr Naresh Kumar made predictions about the temperature in Delhi and said that the minimum temperature in the city is likely to increase by 2-4 degrees Celsius next week and the weather will become more pleasant. The minimum night temperature is expected to rise to 9-10 degrees Celsius.

What will the weather be like in other states?

The Meteorological Department has also included weather and temperature details in other states in its latest report. The report predicts that the minimum temperature in regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad will remain below 5 degrees Celsius in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad during the last 24 hours.

Northern and eastern regions such as Western Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, as well as isolated places in Punjab, Vidarbha, Northern Interior Karnataka and Telangana, are experiencing severe cold wave conditions.

In fact, cold wave conditions have been prevailing in Western Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Odisha for the last six days, but Delhi-NCR will have to wait for the real winter cold.
