Bronx woman worried about health after apartment overrun with rats
A Bronx woman is fighting a losing battle; He says his apartment is infested with mice. She is now worried about her health after repeatedly calling for help to her landlord and complaining to the municipality.
Armed with a piece of plywood, Cora Robinson spends her days trying to defend her home against mice.
“I thought that would keep them from running around the baseboard, but now what they’re doing is they’re so big they’re jumping over it,” Robinson said.
Robinson said at least two mice were wandering around her kitchen Friday night. Any hope of hosting Easter has completely gone out the window.
“I’m tired of cleaning the mess off the stove. So when you turn the oven on, it smells like them,” she says.
Robinson says it stuck with him.
“I can’t sleep, I can’t eat. And if I don’t stop this, I’m going to end up in the hospital. I almost found myself there yesterday,” she adds.
The breast cancer survivor is already dealing with health issues and is concerned about the conditions she and her dog are exposed to.
“His food, his bed and his water are in my bedroom. I can’t leave him here because they’ll get inside him. I’m done now. I’m so disgusted because it’s not right that I have to live like this,” she says.
He filed a complaint with the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development, which cited his landlord in the past, according to documents.
Eyewitness News left a message with Asden Management and emailed homeowners; They were all defendants in a tenant lawsuit filed in 2023 alleging unlivable conditions at 1777 Grand Concourse. The tenants’ lawyer said that the case is still ongoing.
Robinson says he would love to move out of the building he lives in, but since he is 71 years old, he cannot afford to do so. If an elderly person cannot live comfortably, it says something is wrong in this city.
“All these people need to come and look and smell. I wish they would,” he says.
