The Trump administration said Monday it will add generic drugs to its direct-to-consumer drug sales website TrumpRx, in an effort to expand a platform that is key to his administration’s efforts to lower prescription drug costs in the United States.
President Donald Trump said at an event Monday that the administration has added more than 600 generic drugs to the site. The administration also added new tools to the platform, including an option to connect patients to the lowest-priced pharmacy in their neighborhood and home delivery of their prescriptions.
He said management has partnered with some industry players that sell drugs directly to consumers at transparent prices, including Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drug Company, Amazon Pharmacy and GoodRx. Executives from Cuban and other partners also attended Monday’s event.
“With the inclusion of this massive catalog of low-cost generics on TrumpRx.gov, consumers will now have a single source to ensure they are getting the lowest possible cost on their prescriptions, so they have real choice today,” Trump said.
Until Monday, TrumpRx offered a selection of brand-name products from manufacturers that had struck major deals with the administration to voluntarily lower the prices of some drugs for Americans. This includes blockbuster obesity drugs from Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk, which have been listed on the site since their launch in February.
Trump claimed Monday that the platform has been visited more than 10 million times and has already saved Americans more than $400 million.
But it’s still unclear whether all patients, especially those covered by insurance, will find greater cost savings in using the site to purchase their medications than current methods.
TrumpRx targets people willing to pay cash and forgo insurance; This suggests that patients with no or limited insurance coverage may benefit the most. The site also doesn’t sell drugs directly to American patients, but acts as a central hub that directs them to drug manufacturers that offer discounts on certain products on their own direct-to-consumer sites or gives them discount coupons to take to pharmacies.
