Sonu Nigam, Diljit Dosanjh, Arijit Singh, Vishal Mishra, Mithoon join hands to recreate Sandese Aate Hai in Sunny Deol film

According to reports, the makers of Border 2 paid an unprecedented Rs 10 million to secure the rights of the original track, which is an all-time record in Bollywood history. Border’s original Sandese Aate Hai was sung by Sonu Nigam and Roop Kumar Rathod, composed by Anu Malik and penned by Javed Akhtar.
Sandese Aate Hai from the Border
Border 2, starring Sunny Deol and also starring Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan and Ahan Shetty, is one of the most anticipated Indian films of 2026. For the war drama sequel, Mithoon quietly reimagines one of Bollywood’s most ambitious musical re-creations of the decade: the reimagined Sandese Aate Hai 2.0.
According to sources who claim to have witnessed closed-door sessions at Yash Raj Studios, the Tum Hi Ho composer has assembled a once-in-a-generation vocal ensemble: Sonu Nigam, Diljit Dosanjh, Vishal Mishra and Arijit Singh, bringing together four different emotional universes under one patriotic banner.
Recreating such a legacy required someone with deep emotional intelligence and musical purity. Therefore, it was decided to entrust the reboot to Mithoon. In 2023, the composer did full justice to Udd Ja Kale Kawa and Main Nikla Gaddi Leke, two iconic tunes he recreated for Gadar 2, which also featured Sunny Deol.
Industry insiders suggest that this remake, which used over 100 backing singers for the final version, is positioned as the biggest song ever made in Indian cinema, both in terms of scale and emotional weight, given that the track will be pictured in a huge open-air venue.
Border’s original Sandese Aate Hai, which was a blockbuster in 1997, was sung by Sonu Nigam and Roop Kumar Rathod, composed by Anu Malik and penned by Javed Akhtar. It remains one of the most powerful patriotic songs in the country.
Reports also reveal that the makers paid an unprecedented Rs 10 million to secure the rights of the original track, which is an all-time record in Bollywood history.
According to a source close to the development, “Sandese Aate Hai is the heartbeat of Border. If the spirit had to be revived, the makers felt that only Mithoon could pull off this mammoth feat. In fact, Anu Malk also got the nod, who was of the firm view that if anyone else could do justice to the original, it would be only Mithoon. The makers were clear; they wanted emotional integrity, not gimmicks. That is why they spent so much money.”
“The work on Sandese Aate Hai 2.0 has been going on for nearly a year with the involvement of over 500 music technicians, orchestra players, arrangers and sound engineers in the making of the track. The four singers have reportedly been singing with Mithoon at Yash Raj Studios for the last six months, experimenting with vocal layers, emotional rhythms and orchestral colours. This is not a relaxation session, it is like witnessing history being rewritten,” the source further added.
The recreated version will be illustrated on Sunny Deol (voiced by Arijit Singh), Varun Dhawan (voiced by Vishal Mishra), Ahan Shetty (voiced by Sonu Nigam) and Diljit Dosanjh (voiced by Diljit Dosanjh).
Produced by JP Dutta, Bhushan Kumar and Nidhi Dutta, Border 2 also stars Sonam Bajwa, Mona Singh, Medha Rana and Paramvir Cheema in important roles. Directed by Anurag Singh, the film is scheduled to release in theaters worldwide on January 22, 2026, coinciding with the Republic Day weekend.
