Who is Justice Surya Kant? India’s newly appointed Chief Justice, set to take oath today

Justice Surya Kant will be sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) today (Monday), replacing Justice BR Gavai, who retired on Sunday evening. Judge Surya Kant will have a tenure of approximately 15 months and is scheduled to leave office on February 9, 2027, after he turns 65.

Who is Judge Surya Kant?

Justice Surya Kant hails from Haryana’s Hisar district and is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. He served as Senior Advocate and Solicitor General of Haryana. He was Haryana’s youngest Attorney General at the age of 38 when he was appointed in 2020. He also served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court from 2018 to 2019.

He completed his graduation from Hisar Government Postgraduate College. He later received his bachelor’s degree in law from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984. Later, he completed his Master’s degree in Law from Kurukshetra University in 2011.
