Dennis Richardson to lead review of federal law enforcement
Former intelligence chief Dennis Richardson will lead a review of federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies to examine their performance ahead of last Sunday’s terror attack at Bondi Beach.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Sunday that the review will be carried out within his department and will be made public when it is completed in April 2026.
“The Prime Minister and Cabinet will examine whether federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies have the right powers, structures, processes and sharing arrangements to keep Australians safe following the horrific anti-Semitic Bondi Beach terror attack,” Albanese said in a statement issued late Sunday morning.
“Last Sunday’s ISIS-inspired brutality reinforces the rapidly changing security environment in our country. Our security agencies must be in the best position to respond.”
Richardson served as a secretary in both the Defense and Foreign Affairs and Trade departments, as well as as Australia’s ambassador to the United States.
Albanese said his review would build on previous work done on the Independent Intelligence Review.
