Before the 2025 Bihar elections, Neetu Chandra was chosen as the SVEEP icon in Bihar to raise voter awareness. He was sacked after praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Nitish Kumar during a live TV debate.
The Election Commission of India on Sunday suspended actress Neetu Chandra, an icon of Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) in Bihar, for expressing views in favor of political parties during the recently concluded assembly polls. Chandra was chosen as the icon to raise voter awareness ahead of the assembly polls. After the election results were announced, Neetu Chandra praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Nitish Kumar during a live TV debate.
In a letter to the actor, Additional Chief Electoral Officer Prashanth Kumar said, “Complaints have been received that you expressed your views in favor of some political parties during the election process, which is against the undertaking given by you while appointing you as the Bihar SVEEP icon.” he said. “In your commitment, you stated that you have no political affiliation with any political party. You also stated that you will not be associated with any political party or candidate during the election. You have been removed from the role of SVEEP icon with immediate effect.”
Born in Bihar’s capital Patna, Chandra has appeared in many Bollywood films such as Abhay Deol, Paresh Rawal starrer Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Garam Masala starring Akshay Kumar and John Abraham, and 13B opposite R Madhavan. He has also acted in many South Indian films, including Godavari, Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai, Manam, Singam 3 and Vaigai Express.
Neetu also starred in a Hollywood movie called Never Back Down: Revolt. Released in 2021, this American martial arts film was the standalone sequel to Never Back Down: No Surrender and the fourth film in the Never Back Down series. At the 63rd National Film Awards, he won the Best Feature Film award in Maithili as the producer of the film Mithila Makhaan, directed by his elder brother Nitin Chandra.
