ESPN broadcaster mistakenly calls Kewan Lacy by the name of late LSU receiver

Greg McElroy had an unfortunate slip of the tongue during Thursday night’s College Football Playoff broadcast.

McElroy was the color commentator for the Sugar Bowl between Ole Miss and Georgia and saw Ole Miss make a game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

But long before that, McElroy tried to congratulate Rebel running back Kewan Lacy but called him by the wrong name.

“I love the way Kyren Lacy runs” McElroy said before correcting himself.

Kyren Lacy was a former LSU wide receiver who died by suicide last year amid a legal battle stemming from a December 2024 crash that killed a 78-year-old man. He was charged with reckless driving (speeding and passing in a restricted area) after a driver swerved to avoid Lacy and crashed into another vehicle.

Police said “multiple witnesses” told responding officers that Kyren Lacy’s driving caused the crash. Lacy was charged with negligent homicide, hit-and-run, and reckless driving.

Kewan Lacy rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, helping Ole Miss reach the College Football Playoff semifinals.
