Happy New Year 2026: The Gregorian calendar, followed in most parts of the world today, was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII more than 400 years ago. Although the calendar is now a global standard, many people know little about the man who introduced this great reform.

Pope Gregory XIII was born in Bologna, Italy, in 1502. He came from a noble family and was well educated; He studied law and theology before entering the church. He became the 226th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church in 1572 and served until his death in 1585.

He is best remembered for introducing the Gregorian calendar, a system that corrected errors in the earlier Julian calendar.

Why was a new calendar needed?

Before Gregory XIII, most of the world followed the Julian calendar, which Julius Caesar introduced in 45 BC. Over time, this calendar gradually fell out of synchronization with the Earth’s actual orbit around the Sun.

By the 16th century the calendar was off by about 10 days. This caused problems, especially for the Church, as important Christian holidays such as Easter no longer fell in the correct season.

Birth of the Gregorian Calendar

To fix this, Pope Gregory XIII commissioned a group of astronomers and scientists to reform the calendar. In 1582 he introduced the Gregorian calendar, which corrected the error by skipping 10 days. In the countries that adopted this, October 4, 1582 was immediately followed by October 15.

The new calendar also introduced a revised leap year system to prevent slippage in the future. This made it much more accurate and reliable.

Global Impact and Adoption

Although the Gregorian calendar was introduced by the Catholic Church, it gradually spread around the world due to its accuracy. Many Protestant and non-Christian countries adopted it centuries later. It is the international standard used today for civil purposes, commerce, science and global communications.

Pope Gregory XIII’s calendar reform remains one of the most influential changes in human history.
