The beating to death of a Hindu car driver in Bangladesh is the latest in a series of attacks on people from the minority community in recent weeks. According to local media reports, Samir Das was 28 years old at the time of the fatal attack. The incident took place in Daganbhuiyan town of Chittagong district on Sunday night. The assailants reportedly beat and stabbed Das to death before stealing his battery-operated autorickshaw and fleeing the scene.
A police officer in Daganbhuiyana said Das was killed with “country-made weapons”. The official added: “Prima facie, it appears to be a pre-planned murder. The perpetrators also looted a rickshaw after the murder. The victim’s family will file a First Information Report (FIR). Police have launched an operation to identify and arrest the accused.” This is the latest in a series of incidents in which members of the Hindu community have been brutally killed in the neighboring country. Bangladesh unrest
Bangladesh has remained tense since the killing of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi in the national capital Dhaka in December. India has repeatedly expressed concern about the treatment of Hindus and other minorities in the Muslim-majority country. However, Bangladesh downplayed the situation, describing the attacks as isolated incidents. Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Younis, instead accused India of exaggerating the extent of the violence. Tensions have flared further just weeks before crucial parliamentary elections expected to be held in February this year.
