Who were Robert Menzies’ ‘forgotten people’?

Most voters are not familiar with the entire 1942 book by Robert Menzies.Forgotten People” speech.
They may have known that this was one of a series of wartime radio broadcasts made while the former Prime Minister was on the backbenchers planning his comeback, and that it was about carving out a new constituency for the non-Labour side of politics in the political atrocities at the time: the middle class is being overlooked, Menzies claims.
If we are going to talk about classes, then it is time to say something about the forgotten class – the middle class – people who are in constant danger of being crushed between the upper and lower millstones of the false war.
