Walmart is the country’s largest grocer. The chain has more than 3,500 supercenters and nearly 700 Neighborhood Market grocery stores in the United States, and these stores are where many people go when shopping for freshly stocked groceries, household items, and, yes, a delicious deli hot bar and cold cuts. These 4,000-plus Walmart stores feature deli counters offering cut-to-order meats and cheeses, as well as prepared foods like salads and fried chicken.
While browsing the deli, a Walmart shopper may find brands like Sara Lee, Prima Della, and Butterball. But one standout brand is missing; and that is Boar’s Head, one of the most popular deli brands in the country. according to our survey. So, if it’s such a big seller, why can’t you find its products at Walmart delis?

Our deeper review: Boar’s Head is known as a premium brand, so its retail prices reflect that. Boar’s Head luncheon meat can go for around $20 a pound, and Walmart is all about low prices. Even the most expensive Walmart deli meats generally don’t sell for more than $15 a pound. In addition to the notable price difference, even Boar’s Head reportedly He refused to sell to Walmart.
But wait: Walmart sells some Boar’s Head seasonings, so why not deli meat, too? This is because stores that sell Boar’s Head deli products often cannot sell other brands under the terms of their contract with Boar’s Head. (This is why you rarely see Boar’s Head and Thumann’s or Dietz & Watson side by side in stores.) Walmart uses its own brand, Prima Della, instead of the brand name.
However, other grocers regularly carry its own brand as well as Boar’s Head, including Albertsons, Safeway, and several other chains owned by Albertsons Companies right next to its own brand, Primo Taglio. Boar’s Head is also sold with numerous other brands such as Private Selection, Black Bear, Delicery, Taste of Inspirations and the list goes on. From where? Because these are all store brands owned by the retailer, they are generally not prohibited from being sold alongside Boar’s Head.
