Why family had to let go of Raj Kapoor’s iconic bungalow Deonar Cottage for Rs 100 crore?

Deonar Cottage was Raj Kapoor’s personal bungalow in Chembur, Mumbai, where he lived with his family. Located next door to the cottage, RK Studios was the base of the film production company RK Films. The properties were later sold to Godrej Properties.
The much-anticipated Dining With The Kapoors is finally streaming on Netflix, giving viewers a glimpse into the bond between the members of the Kapoor family and their love for food. Besides this, the show also revisits the life and fond memories of the legendary Raj Kapoor at Deonar Cottage in Chembur East. It is heartbreaking that India’s oldest film family had to give up their ancestral property over Deonar Cottage and RK Studios was sold to Gojrej Properties. In the show, Raj Kapoor’s daughter Rima Jain and other family members, including Randhir Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, are seen visiting Deonar Cottage and rekindling old childhood memories.
Why did the Kapoors have to give up Raj Kapoor’s Deonar Cottage at RK Studios?
According to Rima Jain, Raj Kapoor’s wife, Krishna Kapoor, had advised her children not to desperately cling to “bricks and walls” after she was gone, as the house would be too big and too full of memories to maintain. About RK Studios The iconic film studio suffered a massive fire in September 2017. A significant part of the studio, including valuable memorabilia such as Raj Kapoor’s Mera Naam Joker mask and Awaara piano, was destroyed. Additionally, the studio had been struggling with losses for years; therefore, it was not economically viable to rebuild with state-of-the-art technology.
For those unaware, Deonar Cottage was Raj Kapoor’s personal bungalow in Chembur, Mumbai, where he lived with his family. Located next door to the cottage, RK Studios was the base of the film production company RK Films. The properties were later sold to Godrej Properties and redeveloped as the luxury residential complex Godrej RKS.
