Why good people leave politics — and what it costs us

People often ask why “good people” don’t stay in politics. This question applies not only to elected representatives but also to consultants, public officials and policy experts operating within political systems.
This question is often framed by confusion, sometimes frustration; as if separation meant fragility, failure, or lack of resilience. I wish they were tougher. I wish they had stayed longer. I wish they would learn to play the game.
The question is increasingly being asked why some “good people” never enter, as if stepping into the official arena is the only legitimate form of contribution.
