Why Nathan Cleary is in doubt for Penrith Panthers’ opener

Cogger said Cleary is more than ready to come into the game if he is officially sidelined. The 28-year-old played a key role for the club recently in their 2023 grand final win before spending two seasons at the Knights.

“I’ve had a few minor issues in pre-season, I’ve taken further precautions tonight, but I’ll be ready to go in two weeks if needed,” Cogger said.

“We’re all optimistic. It wasn’t much. They don’t need to tell me.” [to be ready] – I know that this is my duty when necessary.”

Makasini got up and was able to continue playing. The 18-year-old established his place on the left wing after an excellent performance that included several runs along the touchline.

He was once intercepted by defender Dylan Edwards, but then went over the No. 1 rep for a second time and scored. The four-pointer won’t be forgotten anytime soon by those in Sydney’s inner west. The try came six days after he scored a hat-trick in a trial against the Roosters.

Some fans on social media likened Makasini’s strike on Edwards to All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu and what he can do in the last line of defense in any rugby Test.

Tigers’ left flank of Jarome Luai, Samuela Fainu, Taylan May and Makasini will increase their share of points this year if they stay fit.

Tigers co-captain Jarome Luai said of Makaisini, who you could already chalk up as an NRL rookie of the year candidate if he stays fit: “It was a big game. There was a lot of pressure from outside, but for a young guy with the world at his feet, it’s important for me to make sure he stays level-headed and does the little things right.”

“I had a few nightmares when I went against him in pre-season. He’s got all the physicality and for a young guy staying mentally correct is a big part of this game for him now.”

“He was making a few TikToks [after the hat-trick of tries last weekend against the Knights]. As long as they have representatives at the bank and are well prepared, they can express themselves. He played pretty well tonight.”

Tigers coach Benji Marshall wasn’t sure if he would play most of his big guns considering they wouldn’t play for another three weeks due to the first-round bye. But a welcome win against a genuine premiership candidate in Penrith will give them plenty of confidence.

Penrith coach Ivan Cleary and his assistants were forced to watch the match in the open-air press area after a poor air conditioning unit left the coaches’ box unbearably cold.

In the previous hearing, in which the Dolphins beat the Warriors 38-34, two players were trashed, including Francis Molo, who was suspended for three games for his high shot on Jackson Ford.
