McDonald’s makes menu change at UK branches – customers are furious | UK | News

McDonald’s customers have been outraged by news that a single cup of brown hash is costing almost £2 in some areas. Customers noticed the change at some UK branches of the fast food chain, and the issue gained traction on social media after photos of the menu item, now £1.99, went viral and was viewed 450,000 times in just 48 hours. One post was accompanied by the headline: “£2 for a single brown hash. We’re officially done.”
“This is crazy now,” another user replied. “I don’t visit very often but it’s always been a cheap option, maybe change for a fiver. Maybe primary school kids can get better at these prices.” Others called the price increase “a rip-off,” “madness” and “a step too far.”
Hash browns are generally priced between £1.59 and £1.69; that’s already a big jump from the modest price mark of just 89p in 2019.
The restaurant chain told Metro It said the £2 cost had been introduced in less than 5% of its branches nationwide.
Prices have risen more steadily when it comes to delivery, but a brown has arrived on Just Eat that will set customers back £2.39 a piece before delivery.
McDonald’s has previously attributed other cost increases to ingredients becoming more expensive, including sourcing “Chicken McNuggets made with 100% British and Irish beef and 100% chicken breast.”
But a spokesman blamed the brown hash surge on decisions made by franchisees, who own about 95% of fast food chains worldwide.
“A significant portion of our restaurants are owned and operated by franchisees who set their own prices,” they said.
“As a result, individual items may vary in price, but they all share our commitment to providing our customers with a high-quality restaurant experience and excellent value for money.”
