In all three attacks, the targeted boats were destroyed using short-range missiles.
The US repeated its usual claim that there were smugglers on these ships. However, it is widely believed that Trump’s real aim was to provoke Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by attacking three boats at the same time and to bring both countries to the brink of war.
This is Trump’s second major attack on Venezuela in the past week. On December 10, US commandos seized a Venezuelan merchant ship, and three boats from Venezuela have now been destroyed at sea.
Although the USA and Venezuela do not have a land border, Trump used the term “land road” in his statements. This is seen as a direct signal that Trump is now ready for a ground military operation against Venezuela. Following this statement, the US military deployment near Venezuela was increased and three boats were destroyed soon after.
Trump has a history of first provoking his opponents and then pushing the situation toward conflict. This pattern has been seen repeatedly in his past actions.
Trump threatened North Korea with using nuclear weapons during his first term in 2017. In 2018, he declared Iran’s nuclear enrichment illegitimate and halted talks. It escalated trade tensions with China by imposing tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018-19. During the Ukraine war, Trump declared Russian oil illegal and imposed additional sanctions.
Trump could not engage in conflict with powerful countries such as China and Russia, but he damaged Iran’s nuclear program as well as Israel.
Today, Venezuela faces conditions similar to those of Iran. President Maduro also lacks the capacity to counter Trump’s strategic military power. Therefore, it is believed that Trump will waste no time in igniting a new war if Maduro responds strongly to the ongoing US attacks.
