Yikes, December is here. Plus, the way the holidays happen to fall this year, there will only be three Wine Guy columns this month. Best to get on with it! First order of business? Crossing off all the gifts to buy on the to-do list. Or, at least, those are the best intentions.

Here are a few holiday-savvy picks ready to sate the wine lover on your gift list. And, remember, gift cards to bottle shops always make a great last-minute gift.

Noble Ridge Vineyard & Winery 2017 The One Grand Reserve Sparkling, B.C. ($49.99, available through the winery)
Not to sound like a broken record, but I will say it again: Sparkling wine is the best go-to bottled gift option. Not certain whether to opt for red or white? Not sure of a favourite wine type or region? When in doubt, or even not, just opt for bubbles. Even if sparkling wine doesn’t fit into the recipient’s usual wine rotation, there will always be an occasion. For bonus points, include a card that notes “For best results, store in the fridge for the right impromptu moment.” If that celebratory moment meant opening a bottle of Noble Ridge’s textural and engaging The One Grand Reserve, well, I’d be happy!

Bottom line: A-. Champagne taste on a B.C. budget.

William Fevre 2023 Petit Chablis, France ($39.99, #811232)
If the gift is intended for a classic white wine lover, it’s tough to beat a bottle of solid Chablis. Depending on budget, you could look all the way to Grand Cru, of course, but for a sensible yet still elegant option, Petit Chablis gets the call. William Fevre’s newest vintage engages on several levels — from its citrus and brioche aromas to a smooth, rich but bright mid-palate. The finish is balanced and textural with a lick of acidity keeping things fresh. Great sipped on it’s own, or pair with a gift card to a local cheese monger (Comté or aged cheddar come to mind).
Bottom line: B+. Handsome elegance.

Jim Barry & Sons 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia ($24.99 on sale until Dec. 27, #324520)
On the other hand, if red wine is the bottle call, it again depends how specific you want to get. While the options are near limitless, for a fantastic all-rounder pick — something that is crowd pleasing while not bursting the budget — this Jim Barry & Sons Cab Sauv presents a great option. Pouring a deep, dense purple black, it wafts enticing dark fruit aromas with vanilla undertones. A sweet, ripe fruit entry leads into a robust yet structured stance before a smooth, comforting finish finesses the tastebuds. For best enjoyment, cue up the fireplace and bring out a good book.
