Woman, 34, stabbed in Birmingham attack dies

A woman who was stabbed in the neck in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop in Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.

West Midlands Police said the 34-year-old victim was targeted on Smallbrook Queensway, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 21:00 GMT on Friday.

Djeison Rafael, 21, will appear before Birmingham Magistrates on Monday in connection with the attack.

West Midlands Police said it would apply to have the charges changed to reflect the woman’s death.

The force said officers would be in the city on Monday to provide reassurance and that investigators were supporting the woman’s family.

Detectives are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, who is described as a Black British national and is believed to be wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers and backpack.

The stabbing took place outside the Bullring shopping centre, opposite the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.

Police said they were treating the incident as an “unprovoked attack” and Inspector James Nix said they were trying to understand why it happened.
