Mamdani on homeless encampment near Intrepid Museum in Manhattan

Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday provided few details about the homeless camp that has grown near the Museum of the Brave despite repeated complaints from New York City residents.

The camp stretches for about 12 blocks along the West Side of Manhattan, from 34th Street to 46th Street at 11th Street. based on To the New York Post. The area was reportedly littered with tents, furniture, used needles and suspected stolen goods, while residents also complained of open drug use and prostitution.

Asked about the camp, which is located near a major tourist destination where the city hosts visitors for the FIFA World Cup, Mamdani said the city would “look into the details of it.”

Under city rules, homeless encampments can only be cleared after the city’s Department of Homeless Services (DHS) conducts daily outreach activities for seven days after initial notification, he said.

“The purpose of this outreach is to make sure that we build trust that we can actually connect these New Yorkers with services and connect them with other things that they need, whether it’s medical care or housing support. Then, on the 7th day after notification, the camp will be cleared,” Mamdani said.

“We are focused on connecting New Yorkers to shelters and building a pipeline for stable housing, not just moving New Yorkers from one place to another,” he added.

The camp has been growing for weeks, and workers nearby say the population is growing steadily, according to The Post.

“These people have been here forever,” an employee from the Brave Museum told the outlet.

The maintenance chief of the nearby Jacob K. Javits Convention Center told the press that the camp continued to spread despite repeated efforts to clear parts of the camp.

“This is crazy,” the worker said. “The cops and the janitors and the welfare workers clean one spot, and then from that day on, the next day, they come here. And then they go there. They kind of spread out.”

“We threw them out, now they’re here,” the worker added. “But one thing is for sure, there are more today than there were last month, that’s for sure.”

City records show there have been 48 complaints about homelessness this year through the city’s 311 system throughout the affected area of ​​the West Side, the Post reported; including 30 complaints filed last month alone.
